If something is metaphysical, it belongs to : the part of philosophy that asks what is real, what it means to exist, and what sits under everything we see. A metaphysical question is not one you answer with a ruler or a lab test. It is about being, mind, time, cause. Though actually, outside philosophy class people stretch it. They call a claim metaphysical when they mean it is airy, not practical, or impossible to pin down. English literature also has the Metaphysical poets (Donne and his circle) — that is a history-of-literature label, not a different spelling. The sense on this card is the philosophy one. It is a formal classroom word.
