Metamorphic rock did not start as that kind of rock. Heat, heavy pressure, or hot water worked on it for a very long time, and its insides lined up or grew new crystals, so it became a different rock. The pairs are marble from limestone and slate from shale. Igneous rock is born from melt; sedimentary rock is laid down in layers; metamorphic rock is the one that was cooked and squeezed after it was already rock. People also use metamorphic when they talk about animals that change form, because the word sits on metamorphosis — though in a geology class they mean this slow underground change. It is a school-and-science word, not a café word.
