    An adjective, from the verb 'mess up'. It can describe a thing that is broken or in a bad state ('the files are all messed up'), or a person who has deep emotional problems ('a messed-up kid'). Also, very common in American speech: 'That's messed up' = that is wrong and unfair. Informal, but soft enough for most situations — it is the polite cousin of a ruder phrase.
