Messaging is the sending of written notes by machine: phone, computer, or an app. Text messaging (SMS), instant messaging, and the chat inside an app all sit under this word. When you tap a line on LINE, iMessage, WhatsApp or a work tool, you are doing messaging.
As a noun it names the system or the activity, not one single note. A message is one note. Messaging is the back-and-forth, or the service that carries it. Companies print it on plans and buttons: 'messaging app', 'unlimited messaging'.
It is normal, modern, and not formal. Older speakers may still say 'send a text' or 'send an SMS'. Younger speakers often just say 'message me' and treat messaging as the default way to talk in writing. Email is usually called email, not messaging, even though both move words by machine.
There is a second office use you may meet later — 'the company's messaging' as the story a brand wants you to hear. That is not this sense. Here we mean the electronic sending of notes.
