A mesquite is a tree or large bush of the American dry lands, especially the southwest of the United States and Mexico. It often has thorns, small leaves, and long seed pods. Animals eat the pods; people have ground them into flour for a very long time.
In food talk, mesquite usually means the wood, not the living tree. Burn it on a barbecue and the smoke has a strong, sweet, earthy taste. Texas-style meat, especially brisket, is famous for this. You will also see 'mesquite flavour' on crisps and sauces — sometimes that is real smoke, sometimes only a taste mixed in at a factory.
The word is at home in American English, above all in the southwest and in barbecue. In British English you mostly meet it on menus. It is a borrowed name; it does not split into English pieces. Say it meh-SKEET.
組成Borrowed from Spanish mezquite / mizquite, from Nahuatl mizquitl, the name of the tree. English does not build it from smaller English parts.
