Merlin, with a capital M, is the magician in the old King Arthur stories: a wise man with magic, who advises the king, sees what is coming, and helps Arthur rise. Children meet him in picture books and films; the name feels legendary, not like a neighbour’s name. Though actually there is also a small hawk called a merlin, written the same in English but a different word with a different history — this entry is the magician, not the bird. People still argue how much of the story grew from a real poet or wild man in Welsh tradition, and how much was built by later writers; what English readers know is the figure in the Arthur tales.
組成The magician’s English name Merlin comes from Welsh Myrddin. In the 1100s Geoffrey of Monmouth put him into Latin as Merlinus in the King Arthur stories, and English took Merlin from that. (A small falcon also called a merlin is from Old French esmerillon and is not this name; nor is the later science acronym MERLIN.)
