Mercosur is a trade group of South American countries that agreed to trade more easily with each other and to cut import taxes between them. It started in 1991. The countries people usually name first are Argentina, Brazil, , and Uruguay. Other countries have been involved later, and membership has not always been simple — though actually, news still uses Mercosur for that southern trade club. You will meet the name in stories about trade, farming exports, and South American , not in daily chat unless you follow that news. English keeps the Spanish name rather than translating it.
