A mercer is an old word for someone whose job is buying and selling cloth — especially fine, expensive fabric like silk. You won't meet many mercers today; it's a job from a much older time, when cloth merchants were an important and respected trade. You'll still see the word survive as a family name (Mercer) and in the names of old trade guilds in England.
