A Mercedes is a car made by the German company -Benz (the cars are often called Mercedes-Benz). In ordinary talk the name stands for a strong, expensive, well-built car — the kind rich people, successful business people, and political leaders are thought to buy. In the UK people call one a Merc; in the US they call one a Benz. Though actually, the company now makes smaller models too, but the idea of the word is still ‘a fancy German car.’ It is a brand name, so it takes a capital M. The name is not German in origin. It comes from Spanish Mercedes, a woman’s name from Mary, Our Lady of Mercy. The car was named for Mercédès Jellinek, the daughter of Austrian businessman Emil Jellinek, who ordered a large batch of cars from Gottlieb .
