To memorialize a person or an event is to do something so that other people will keep remembering them: put up a statue, give a street a name, hold a ceremony, fix a plaque to a wall. Schools, cities, and families all do this. Though actually, in American English you also hear it for a more private act — a post online, a scholarship, a tattoo — anything meant as a lasting mark. British spelling is often memorialise, with an s. The word is fairly formal; friends might say “we want to remember her” rather than “we want to memorialize her.” Do not mix it up with memorize, which is only getting words into your own head for a test.
組成From memorial + -ize. A memorial keeps a person or event in mind; -ize makes the verb “to mark so that people will remember.”
