If two things meld, they join and become one. You can also meld things: you bring them together until they mix into a single thing. People use it for flavours in a pot, for music, for ideas, and for groups of people. It is close to blend and merge, but it often feels smooth and slow, not a sudden smash. You will meet it more in writing and in careful speech than in very simple chat. Card players have an older use too — to put down a matching set — but the meaning here is the joining one. The noun comes from the verb: a meld of two styles. Scholars are not sure where the verb comes from: it may be melt and weld pushed into one word, or it may come from an older verb mell, to mix.
