Melbourne is a large city in the southeast of Australia. It is the capital of the state of Victoria, and people usually call it Australia's second city after Sydney. It is a centre for business, making things, universities, sport, and the arts. When someone says they live in Melbourne, they often mean the wide city of suburbs, not only the old streets in the middle. Melbourne is not the capital of the whole country — that is Canberra — but for many years after Australia became one country, the national government did sit in Melbourne, until Canberra was ready. Say the name with a soft ending: MEL-bən, not as if it were born.
組成Named after the 2nd Viscount Melbourne. His title comes from Melbourne in Derbyshire, England, from Old English mylen (mill) + burne (stream).
