A melange is a mixture of different things, often things that do not obviously belong together. It can be food, people, clothes, music, or ideas. English took the word from French, so it sounds a little fancy; in ordinary talk most people just say mix or mixture. Writers, cooks, and shop windows like it because it suggests variety and a little mess, not a careful recipe. You may see the French spelling mélange with a mark over the first e; in English the mark is often dropped, and both are the same word.
