If you are melancholic, you feel a deep, quiet sadness that stays with you. It is not one cry and then you are fine. The feeling sits on you, like grey weather that will not move. People use this word more in books, films, and careful speech than in the school corridor; a friend is more likely to say you look down or blue. You can call a person melancholic, and you can also call music, a face, or a place melancholic when it gives you that same slow sadness. Older writers used it for a kind of character: a thoughtful person whose nature was to be sad. Doctors today do not use it as the name of an illness — they have other words for that — but the old idea is still inside the word. As a noun, a melancholic is a person who is often this way.
組成melancholy + -ic. From Latin melancholicus, from Ancient Greek μελαγχολικός (melankholikós), from μελαγχολία (melankholía, melancholy). Old doctors thought a deep sadness came from black bile in the body; that Greek name is the source.
