The Mekong is a long river in Southeast Asia. It starts high in Tibet, then flows down through China and on through Myanmar, , Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam to the sea. Near the end it spreads into the Mekong Delta in Vietnam, a wet, rich land that grows a huge amount of Asia’s rice. The same delta saw a lot of fighting in the Vietnam War, so the name also appears in history books. In English we say the Mekong or the Mekong River. You meet it in geography, in news about dams, fish, and farming, and in war history. Though actually the river has other names too: in China the upper part is often called the Lancang. For most English , Mekong is the name that maps and world news will use.
組成From Thai แม่โขง (mɛ̂ɛ-kǒong), literally Mother river, a shortened form of แม่น้ำโขง. English took the name in about the nineteenth century.
