Megalithic is the adjective for the huge standing stones that ancient people set in place, and for the age and the people who made them. It describes three sorts of thing. A structure: a megalithic tomb, a megalithic circle — one built from those great stones. A period or culture: the megalithic era, megalithic Britain — the long stretch of prehistory when communities across Europe and beyond were raising them. And, loosely, anything that feels enormous and heavy and ancient — 'a megalithic concrete tower' — though that last use is a writer's flourish, not the technical sense. It lives in books, museum labels, and documentaries; you would rarely say it in conversation. A small pleasure of this word: it is older than the noun megalith. Dictionaries record the adjective first, and megalith was cut down from it afterwards — the reverse of what you would expect.
