Medina is a city in Saudi Arabia. For Muslims it is the second holiest city in the world, after (in older English, ). The Prophet Muhammad lived the last years of his life there, and he is buried there, in the Prophet’s Mosque. Every year huge numbers of people visit after the special journey to . People who are not Muslim are not allowed into the holy heart of the city. In English you will see Medina in religion class, in the news, and in history. Muslims also call it al-Madinah. Though actually, that Arabic name simply meant “the city,” and then this one city kept the name in other languages. You may also see medina used for the old heart of some North African cities; that is the same Arabic word for “city,” but this entry is the Saudi holy city.
