In the United States, many older people (usually 65 and up) have Medicare, a government health plan. Medicare does not pay every bill — there are holes, called gaps. Medigap is extra insurance you buy from a private company to help pay those leftover costs: the parts Medicare leaves for you. It is a US system word. You will not need it for Taiwan’s 健保, and it is not a general English word for “extra health cover” in other countries. Though actually, the name is Medicare + gap, not Medicaid. Medicaid is a different US programme, for people with little money. The two names sit next to each other, and even some books mix them up. Medigap belongs with Medicare.
