A medicated soap, cream, or shampoo has a little medicine mixed into it, to help a small problem of the skin or hair — an itchy head, white bits on the scalp, spots, or a mild rash. You buy it in a pharmacy or a supermarket. It is not hospital treatment, and it will not fix a serious illness. People almost always use the word about things you put on the body, not about pills you swallow. A doctor may tell you to wash with medicated shampoo for a few weeks, then stop. The word sounds a little like a shop or clinic, but it is ordinary English, not a specialist’s private code. Though actually, medicated describes the product, not the person. We do not usually say “a medicated patient” in everyday talk; we say the soap or the cream is medicated.
