    Medial means located in or near the middle, especially of the body or of a word. Doctors and physical therapists use it to describe the side of a body part closer to the middle of the body — the "medial side" of your knee is the side closer to your other knee, while the outer side is "lateral." Language teachers use it for sounds in the middle of a word, as opposed to the beginning or end — the "medial position" of a sound.
