Medellín is a large city in the northwest of Colombia, in the mountains. It is an important industrial and business centre: for a long time people made cloth and other goods there, and it is still one of the country's main cities. In the 1980s and early 1990s, though, the rest of the world mostly heard the name because of cocaine. A powerful illegal group based in the city, often called the Medellín cartel, ran a huge drug trade, and there was a great deal of killing.
