A mecca is a place many people want to go for one clear reason. Writers say “a mecca for ,” “a mecca for ,” “Nashville is a mecca for country music.” The place pulls people in. Though actually, the word begins as a name: Mecca, with a capital M, is the holy city in Saudi Arabia, the most important city in Islam. Muslims face it to pray, and millions travel there for Hajj. When English uses a mecca with a small m, it borrows that idea of a place everyone wants to reach — but it is usually not talking about religion at all. A night market can be “a mecca for street-food lovers.” You meet this use in newspapers, travel ads, and magazines, not in the playground. Some Muslims find the casual use a bit careless, because the real city is sacred; still, the figurative sense is very common in English.
組成From Arabic مَكَّة (Makka), the holy city. The Arabic origin of that name is uncertain. English then used the name, including in American place names, for any place that draws people the way that city does.
