McCarthyism is the name for a fearful time in the United States in the early 1950s. Senator Joseph McCarthy led a hunt for people he said were Communists, especially in government work. Many people lost their jobs, were put on a blacklist (no one would hire them), or were sent to prison. Friends and were pushed to give names so they could save themselves. A lot of the accusations were thin or , and today the word also describes that kind of hunt more widely: accusing people loudly, with little proof, and punishing them by fear. Most Americans now look back on this period with shame.
組成From McCarthy + -ism, named after United States Senator Joseph McCarthy. The word comes from a 1950 Washington Post political cartoon by Herbert Block.
