A mayoress is, in the older British use, the wife of a mayor — she shares the public side of the job, cutting ribbons, visiting schools, sitting at dinners. The word can also mean a woman who does a mayor's work. Though actually, that second meaning is getting rarer, and it can people: a woman who is elected mayor is almost always called mayor, not mayoress, because mayoress has long sounded like “the mayor's wife” rather than “the boss herself”. You will still hear mayoress in some UK towns, in old newspapers, and in ceremonial titles. Americans hardly use it. The ending -ess is the old “female” ending — and like actress or waitress, it is in jobs where we now just say the main title for everyone.
