A maxi is a dress, skirt, or coat that reaches the ankle. People say a maxi dress, a maxi skirt, or just a maxi. It is a fashion-shop word, at home in magazines and on labels, not in a science paper. You can use it as a noun (she wore a maxi) or in front of another clothes word (a maxi coat). Though actually, maxi is the long twin of mini. Mini was cut down from minimum, "the smallest." People then built maxi the other way from maximum, "the greatest," so clothes had a short version and a long one. It is not a general word for "as big as possible." You would not say maxi score or maxi speed — that job still belongs to maximum. In a few other shop phrases maxi- can mean "the long or large kind," but the clothes meaning is the one meet first.
