Mauritius is an island country in the Indian Ocean, east of . Its capital is Port Louis. Visitors know it for beaches, lagoons, and sugar-cane country, and it has long been a holiday place for people with money to spend — though actually, that picture is only one layer. The island has people with roots in India, Africa, Europe, and China, and many families are mixed. English is official, but most people speak Creole at home, and French is everywhere on signs and in the papers. It is a member of the Commonwealth. Do not mix it with , the desert country on Africa’s northwest coast: one is a small island, the other is a large mainland state. The Dutch named the island after Prince Maurits of (Maurice in English).
