A mattress is the big soft flat thing you lie on in bed — the part, filled with springs, foam, feathers, or cotton. Keep it apart from the other bed words: the bed is the whole thing, the bed frame is the wooden or metal part underneath, the mattress sits on the frame, and the sheet goes over the mattress. It is countable: a mattress, two mattresses (note the spelling — double t, double s, and -es in the plural). Common companions: a hard/firm mattress, a soft mattress, a spring mattress, a memory-foam mattress, a double mattress, an air mattress (the one you blow up for guests or for camping). People also talk about turning or flipping a mattress — turning it over so it wears evenly. In Taiwan you will hear the brand-ish word 'spring mattress' a lot; note that in English the standard mattress is assumed to have springs, so you only say 'spring mattress' when you are it with foam or air.

組成The origin is a nice surprise: it comes, through Old French, from Arabic maṭraḥ, 'a place where something is thrown down' — from a verb meaning 'to throw'. Europeans met the habit of throwing cushions on the floor to lie on when they met the Arab world, and the word travelled home with the idea. So a mattress is, at heart, 'the thing thrown down to lie on'.
