The Matterhorn is a famous mountain in the Alps, standing on the border between Switzerland and Italy, near the Swiss town of . It is about 4,478 metres high. What makes it famous is not its height — several Alpine peaks are taller — but its shape: four steep faces meeting in a sharp point, so it looks like a pyramid or a curved horn against the sky. Because of that shape it has become a kind of picture-book mountain, the one people draw when they draw 'a mountain'. It is a serious climb, and its history is part of why people know the name: the first reached the top in 1865, and four of them died on the way down. Note the small grammar point — it takes 'the'. We say 'the Matterhorn', not just 'Matterhorn', the way we say 'the Alps'. And be careful with the picture in your head: the peak you see on chocolate boxes and on the Toblerone box is this mountain, and the one at Disneyland is a copy of it, not the real thing.
組成A German name, borrowed straight into English. In German it is built from Matte (a mountain meadow, a high grassy field) + Horn (a horn). So: 'the horn above the meadow' — the sharp peak that rises over the green slopes below. The nearby town, Zermatt, holds the same 'matt' piece.
