A matron is an older woman, especially one who is married or holds an important, responsible position — the word often suggests she is , experienced, and maybe a little strict. It's also a job title: a 'matron' can be the senior nurse in charge of a hospital ward, or the woman in charge of looking after students in a boarding school.
