Maternity is a word used mostly as an adjective, describing things connected to being pregnant or having just had a baby. "Maternity leave" is time off work a mother takes around the birth. A "maternity ward" is the part of a hospital where babies are born. "Maternity clothes" are clothes made to fit a pregnant body. On its own as a noun, it's a rather formal word for itself, but students will meet it almost always in front of another noun, in phrases like the ones above.
