Matchwood is wood in very thin pieces, like the wood used to make matchsticks. You rarely buy it by that name. You meet the word when something is smashed to matchwood — broken into tiny splinters, wrecked. A wooden boat in a storm, a hut in a crash or a fire: smashed to matchwood. So the word is a bit strong and a bit old, more at home in stories than in a shop. Though actually it is still a clear picture: not a kind of tree, and not a pile of unused matches, but wood as thin and as a match.
