A matador is the whose job, at the end of the fight, is to kill the bull. English speakers often use the word for any man in that ring, though actually Spain’s wider everyday word is torero; matador is a tighter title, and the Spanish word itself means “killer.” In English it is a story-and-film word more than a street word — posters, nicknames, sports talk. People sometimes stretch it for a bold, person. There are women now, but English still often says matador as if the starring fighter were a man, because that is how the word first arrived.
