Mastic, in this sense, is a thick glue or paste that builders and repair people use. The useful trick is that it stays a bit soft: you can bend or shift the joint a little, and the mastic does not crack the way a hard, glassy glue would. You meet it around windows, tiles, roofs, and places that must stay sealed while the building moves in heat, cold, or rain. Though actually, shops may just say 'sealant' or name the brand; mastic is the older, more technical word for this family of sticky . There is also a tree resin with the same name that people once chewed, and the building paste grew out of that sticky idea — but the word in a hardware shop is about the glue, not chewing.
