A masterwork is a painting, statue, piece of music, book, film, or similar thing that is the best work a person has made — or a work so well made that people point to it as a high point. Though actually, English speakers say masterpiece far more often for the same idea; masterwork sounds a little more careful, , or proud. Teachers, critics, and museum texts like it. People stretch it too: a building, a meal, or even a clever plan can be called a masterwork if someone wants to praise the skill in it, not only 'art' in the narrow sense. It does not have to be the only great thing that person ever did; it is the one you hold up.
