A masher is a kitchen tool you press into cooked food — most often potatoes — until the food is soft and smooth. The -er tells you it is the thing that mashes; the action verb is mash, not masher. You hold the handle and push down again and again. A fork can do a rough job, but a masher is made for this. Though actually, in very old, mostly American talk, a masher was also a man who tried too hard to charm women; that sense is dated, and in a kitchen today masher means the potato tool.
