A mash-up is a new piece made by taking parts of two or more songs, videos, or web pages and putting them together. A DJ may mash songs so the beat of one rides under the singing of another. People also mash up film clips, or even two websites, into one new thing. The word is informal and a bit playful. Though actually it is not a careful mix, like a recipe; it is “throw pieces together and see what happens.” You will also see mashup with no . It is not mashed potatoes — that mash is the cousin, but this one lives in music and media.
