Maryland is a state on the east coast of the United States, and one of the thirteen original states from the time the country was formed. It sits on the Chesapeake Bay; its largest city is Baltimore, a busy port. Washington, D.C., the US capital, sits on land beside it, so you will hear Maryland in the same breath as “the area around Washington” even though the District itself is not the state. It is not huge, and people outside the US often cannot point to it on a map, but inside the country it is a real place with its own government, schools, and sports teams — not a nickname and not a brand. The name looks like “Mary’s land,” and that is close to the truth: it was named after Henrietta Maria of France, wife of Charles I of England, whose English name-form is Mary. In speech Americans usually squash it to something like “Merr-ə-lənd,” not a slow “Mary-LAND.” When a student meets it, it is almost always geography or US history, not a word you conjugate or make plural.
