Martinique is a mountainous island in the Caribbean Sea. It is tropical, with hills and coast, and its capital is Fort-de-France. It is ruled by France — it is not an independent country — so French is the official language and everyday life is tied to France even though the island sits far away in the Caribbean. Christopher Columbus named it after Saint Martin of Tours. Some people also suggest the name may come from an older native Caribbean name, Madinina (“island of flowers”) or Matinino (“island of women”), but that is only a suggestion, not a sure fact. In English the word is simply the place-name; it is not used for a person.
