In the New Testament, Martha is a woman who lived with her sister Mary. When Jesus visited their home, Mary sat and listened to him, but Martha was busy getting food ready for the guests. She even complained that Mary was not helping. Jesus told her that Mary had chosen the better thing that day. Because of that story, Martha often stands for the kind of Christian who works hard to serve other people — cooking, cleaning, looking after guests — rather than sitting still to listen. English speakers may call someone “a Martha” when they mean a person who cannot rest while there is work to do for others. The word can sound a little churchy. Though actually, in ordinary life you will more often meet Martha as a woman's name, with no Bible story attached at all; the extra meaning appears when people are talking about that type of busy, serving person.
