Marseilles is a big city in the south of France, on the Mediterranean Sea. It is France’s second city, after Paris, and it has been a port for a very long time — ships have come in and out of it for more than two thousand years. In older English the name is often written Marseilles, with an s at the end. The French name, and the name you will see on maps today, is Marseille, without that s. It is a working port and an industrial city, not only beaches and old streets. Some films and newspapers also talk about it as if it were a centre for illegal drugs. That picture is only a slice of the truth, and it can be unfair to a whole city, but you will meet it in stories. If you are writing the French name, use Marseille; if you are reading older English, Marseilles is the same place.
組成From Old French Marseilles (an old form of Marseille), from Latin Massilia / Marsilia, from Ancient Greek Massalía. That Greek name probably came from a language of Italy before Latin, perhaps Ancient Ligurian mas, 'spring'.
