Marriott is a large American hotel company. It runs many hotels in the United States and quite a few in other countries, under the Marriott name and under other names it owns. When people say they are staying at “the Marriott,” they mean one of those big, fairly expensive business or tourist hotels — not hotels in general. In Taiwan the name you will see on the building is 萬豪. The company name began as a family name, and that family name came from Mariot, an old English woman’s given name. Nobody thinks about that in the lobby; in ordinary talk it is simply the hotel brand.
