Marrakesh is a large, famous city in western Morocco. Visitors come for the old red-walled town, the busy square, the markets, and the crafts — especially carpets and leather. It is hot, lively, and one of the cities people picture when they picture Morocco, though actually it is not the capital (that is ), and it is not the main business city (that is more Casablanca). English uses two spellings, Marrakesh and Marrakech; the second follows French and is common on maps and in travel writing. Same city. When someone says they “went to Marrakesh,” they almost always mean a trip to that old tourist city, not a political or office visit.
