Two related meanings. (1) The big sign above the entrance of a theater or cinema, showing the name of the movie or show, often lit up with lights. (2) A large tent used for outdoor parties or events, like weddings — this second meaning is more common in British English. There's also a modern use as a describing word: 'a marquee player' or 'marquee event' means the main, most important, headline one — the one that draws the biggest crowd.
