Markup is the amount of money a seller adds to the cost of making or buying something, to decide the final selling price and make a profit - if something costs $10 to make and sells for $15, the markup is $5. In computing, 'markup' also means special code added to plain text to control how it looks, like the tags in HTML markup, which is why we say 'markup language.'
