A marigold is a garden plant with bright yellow or orange flowers, often with many packed into a round head. People grow them in pots and flower beds; some kinds have a strong smell, and sometimes plant them near vegetables. The name is an old compound: Mary — the Virgin Mary — plus golde, a Middle English name for this golden flower, related to gold. Though actually, English is a bit messy here. “Marigold” is used for more than one yellow-orange garden plant that look cousin-like, so the tidy picture of one exact flower is tidier than a real garden. People also use marigold for the colour of those flowers. In Taiwan you will see the bright ruffled ones in parks and around holidays; English speakers pointing at those are usually using this word.
