In informal British English, marge is simply short for — the yellow spread. Someone at the table might say pass the marge. It is and casual; you would not put it on a food label. Though actually, English has another, much rarer marge, from French marge and Latin margo, meaning an edge or a margin; it is a cousin of margin. Almost nobody uses that one now except in old poetry. And Marge, with a capital letter, is also a short form of the name Margaret — the cartoon mother Marge Simpson is how many students meet the spelling first. The food word is the of . It is not from the name, and it is not from margin.
