A margarita is an alcoholic drink, a cocktail. The heart of it is tequila, a strong spirit from Mexico, mixed with lemon or, more often, lime juice. Many recipes also add a sweet orange . The glass often has salt stuck around the rim, and you sip the sour drink through that salt. You can have it frozen — blended with ice — or on the rocks, over ice. It is a party drink, not a formal one: bar, beach, Saturday night. The name was borrowed from Spanish margarita, which is the same name as English Margaret, and further back it ties to a word for pearl. That is why it is a of Margaret, of Italian Margherita, and of marguerite, a kind of daisy. The pizza called Margherita is named after a queen, not after the drink. Do not mix the cocktail up with that pizza, or with — they only look a little like cousins on the page.
