A marathoner is someone who runs a marathon: the very long road race of 42.195 . The word is simply marathon plus -er, the usual English ending for a person who does a thing. It is a little more ‘sports page’ than everyday talk; many people just say marathon runner. You can use it for anyone who takes on the race, not only the winner — a first-timer on race day is already a marathoner for that day. It does not mean a person from Marathon in Greece. That place gave the race its name, but a marathoner is defined by the running. People also stretch marathon to mean any long, draining effort (a marathon meeting); they do not usually stretch marathoner in the same way.
