Maracas are a pair of hollow balls on handles, filled with seeds, beads, or other small hard things. You hold one in each hand and shake them to keep the beat. They belong to Latin American music — salsa, cumbia, and a lot of pop that borrows those rhythms — and the sound is a dry, cheerful rattle, not a drum and not a bell. English almost always uses the plural, because they come as a pair; the singular maraca exists, but people rarely buy or play just one. They are easy to play badly: if you shake on the wrong beat, everyone hears it. In a school band they count as percussion; at a party they are just something you shake.
