A marabou is a very large African : a long-legged bird with a long bill, a bare head, and a pouch at the throat. It walks about on the ground more than it fishes, and it is a scavenger — it often feeds on dead animals — so people have not always spoken of it kindly. The English name came from French marabou, an older spelling of marabout. Though actually, many English speakers first meet marabou on a clothes label: the word also names the fluffy under-feathers used on boas and trims. That fashion sense grew out of the bird, which is still the older meaning.
